Overview
Commissioned by director Oliver Wergers for the rock band Dramatist and their label Devil Duck Records, we produced the music video for "Fat White Families." The project’s ambition was to create a high-end cinematic piece that positions the band on a global stage. Central to the narrative is a critique of the "affluent society," personified by a decadent character living in extreme, blind wealth. Our goal was to visualize this excess through a lens that is simultaneously mesmerizing and repulsive.
Challenges & Approach
The creative challenge was to illustrate the total disconnect between the protagonist and reality. We visualized various scenarios within a lavish estate where the character exists in a bubble of luxury, completely oblivious to the band performing with raw energy around him. To capture this tension, we focused on "fantastic imagery" that highlights the grotesque nature of his lifestyle. By pairing high-end production design with sharp, cinematic visuals, we created a world where the viewer is torn between the beauty of the frames and the decadence of the subject matter.
The result
The final video is a powerful visual commentary on modern overconsumption. It successfully elevated Dramatist by providing them with a provocative and intellectually engaging visual identity. The contrast between the band’s authentic rock performance and the character’s repulsive decadence resonated strongly with audiences, sparking discussions on social media. The film achieved its goal of being both a stunning piece of art and a dignifying debut for the band on the international scene.
